Available Programs

EPIC’s goal is to provide all students with a variety of opportunities to access their education in supportive environments throughout their school day. The program was created to serve the educational needs of students with multiple disabilities who require an intensive, integrated service environment that addresses their academic, communication, motor skill development, and medical needs. Multiple adaptive supports and assistive technology are used to enhance learning. Students referred to this program require a small classroom environment with a high staff-to-student ratio and nursing oversight.

Lifeways provides a substantially separate educational environment for students whose profile meets the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder, neurological or intellectual disability. Students are provided with individualized academic, social pragmatic and behavioral curriculum that allows them to achieve their personal and educational goals. Lifeways was created to serve the needs of students who require an intensive, integrated service environment to enhance their academic, communication, behavioral, social and motor skill development. Students referred to Lifeways require a small classroom environment with high staff-to-student ratio.

Lifeworks offers students a learning environment that enhances their academic, vocational, transitional, life and social skills in a structured, substantially separate classroom. Lifeworks provides additional support consisting of applied learning experiences in functional academics, vocational skills, self-management, and independent living. Lifeworks presents the opportunity to participate in community job placements that include retail work, maintenance work, animal care, food service and many other internships that are tailored to each individual student’s aptitudes, interests and behavioral profile.

Essex Academy Lower School serves students who have a documented history of emotional, behavioral and/or psychiatric needs. The school provides students with individual academic and therapeutic support services during the school day, with the ultimate goal of the student attaining a sufficient degree of behavioral and emotional health to allow a return to his/her community. Essex Academy Lower School provides a small, structured academic and therapeutic environment for students who are currently unable to make progress in the regular school setting because of their social/emotional needs. Students’ behaviors are acknowledged as a message of needs, such as self-esteem, belonging, safety, security, and self-actualization.

Essex Academy Upper School is a therapeutic educational program for students with social and emotional disabilities and specific learning needs. This program provides a supportive, academic environment that leads to personal and academic growth and learning. The school provides a small, structured academic and therapeutic environment for students who are currently unable to make effective progress in a typical school setting because of their social/emotional needs. Academic curriculum is based on the guidelines set forth by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the Common Core.

Merrimack Academy Methuen provides a substantially separate educational environment for middle and high school-aged students. Students in this program have experienced significant behavioral or psychological challenges in typical public schools or in other out-of-district placements, as well as in their own home. Merrimack Academy offers individualized and personalized instruction in an effort to engage students who have stopped participating or are unable to participate in their education. The program offers a supportive, educational environment for students who struggle socially and/or emotionally in a typical educational setting.

VISIONS supports and assists individuals with community work placement at vocational work sites. It also provides individuals with vocational counseling, vocational interest surveys, training, and additional social experiences through a recreation program.
